Our Story

Nestled in the skirts of the majestic Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Mountain ranges in the far north of India, the Kashmir Valley is a beautifully diverse region with snowy peaks and green meadows. It is a unique blend of a rich cultural heritage, long-standing traditions and breathtaking nature. Each encounter with the local people is a colorful journey to the past, to the heart and essence of their culture conveyed through the stories that they tell. Inspired by these stories of heritage and the beauty of this land, we founded Kashmir-Cashmere to share a piece of Kashmir’s legacy with the world.

The Heritage of the Kashmir Valley

The Kashmir Valley – in addition to its beauty – is renowned for the production of two of the most luxurious and sought-after fabrics: cashmere and pashmina. Derived from the soft wool of the local mountain goats, cashmere is celebrated for its warmth, softness, and light weight. Pashmina – a rarer and finer class of cashmere, is considered to be the softest, finest and warmest wool in the world. In fact, the name pashmina translates as “soft gold” speaking for its supreme qualities. It is derived from the softest undercoat of the neck and chest of the Changthangi goats that live in the highest-altitudes of the Himalayas, above 4500m. Because the Changthangi goats are adapted to the harsh and cold environment of the region with temperatures reaching -40 degrees Celsius, the pashmina sourced from them possesses remarkable warmth and insulating properties. Born in the Kashmir region, the exclusive art of pashmina has stayed with the local master artisans for centuries.
